Yesterday as I passed two coworkers in the hallway (neither of whom I know), one of them cheerfully blurted out “Hi Char!”
Two things:
1) I’ve never spoken to this coworker before in my life (at least I don’t think I have) so how does he know who I am?
2) Who does he think he is, calling me ‘Char’?
Lately I’ve also been receiving emails from coworkers that have been starting out with “Hi Char…”
I guess I don’t mind quite so much in the instances where I know and work with those coworkers every day. I suppose I can tolerate that. Barely. Usually the only people that are allowed to call me ‘Char’ are my family members and friends. Close friends. You know who you are. (Even Mr X sticks to my full name.) But really not even many of the close friends I’ve made post-college have attempted to address me that way….so it’s strange to suddenly hear my coworkers using it after all these years of being addressed simply as ‘Charlotte.’
But strangers or near-strangers? They better stick with 'Charlotte' or else....or else nothing really - I'd curse their names behind their backs but I don't know what their names are. Maybe I'll just have to shake my fist at them....menacingly.

You're right! Most of my family calls me Mind (not mind like a brain, mind like wind), and it's always weird to me when someone else shortens it. My midwife always has shortened it to Mind, which is just weird. I guess she feels pretty close to me, after delivering two of my kids and seeing all that down there. Funny, she also calls Wyatt just 'Wy'. NOBODY else does that, just her. I'm sure next time I go in, Lindsay will just be Linds. But she's earned it I suppose--those are the 2 she delivered.
I'm sad Mr. X is gone, but happy that it means you are posting regularly again.
that is weird. you could be called worse things... like my nicknames which i won't list on here.
i always notice who says my name right. most of the family doesn't, which stuart doesn't understand. i've gotten a lot of people to jump on the bandwagon and calling him 'stu' now.
one more thing. it's STUART not STEWART.
I have only ever heard Gilbert call you Char. I wouldn't dare... as I have my own hated nic name.
Raise your hand if you want to know what Nicole's hated nickname is!
You can't see it, but my hand is totally up in the air right now.
If I tell you the name, you will have power over me that I simply can not allow... the power to drive me nuts.
It's like Vic for me. Only my Mom. ONLY my Mom.
Char... I've used it some with you but it never feels right. I'm down with Charlotte.
