Durango Silverton Train

I would highly recommend this train ride to anybody who is planning to visit southern Colorado. It was a fascinating experience and it entertained with stunning views. It takes about three and a half hours though, so that's one of the downsides. Also, because the train is powered by coal one ends up quite sooty by the end of the trip. But then again, we rode in the open air car rather than the enclosed ones. But I would say the soot was worth it for the great photos and views.

At times we were precariously close to the edges of sheer cliffs. It was exhilarating to look down.
And at other times we were uncomfortably close to rock faces - I suppose if you stuck your head out at the wrong time you'd be in a world of hurt, quite literally.

Mr X was coming back from one of the other cars. It was fun to go between the cars.

See the billowing soot cloud? That floated down right onto us.

Here we have arrived at our destination: Silverton, CO.

This is what the old mining town of Silverton looks like. I absolutely loved it.

This is just a photo of some of the Aspens in Silverton.
