The Opera House in Paris is generally referred to as the Palais Garnier because of it's architect, Charles Garnier. This place is completely over-the-top opulent. It took 14 years to build and was finished in 1875. Another reason for the fame of this place is that it is used as the setting for the 1911 novel The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux. Of course that also means that the subsequent adaptations by Andrew Lloyd Weber for the musical as well as the more recent film, in theory, use the Palais Garnier as the setting as well.
