The Camping Trip

Our camping trip last weekend went well. Mr X and I were both battling a bit of a cold when we left last Friday and I don't think camping helped us out any as we don't seem to have made any progress in our recovery. BUT - we had a great time despite being under the weather. We went to the William Heise Couty Park in the Santa Rosa Mountains, near Julian, CA. Here is our campsite:

The picture below I took with my new camera, trying out the night portrait setting. It seemed to work well.

The area around where we camped apparently is overrun by wild turkeys. They were all over the place and they even came into our camp area at night. We would hear them gobbling throughout the night. It was very strange.
Our first night there Mr X grilled us up some steaks and I cooked "Potatoes Anna" in my dutch oven. It turned out surprisingly well - except for one little section onto which I spilled ashes from the coals.
The next day we went on a short hike (we were planning on going all day but since we were sick, we cut it to 3 hours). The area where we hiked had been ravaged by the Southern California fires the year prior. You can see it from this picture - all of the large trees are just blackened sticks towering above the new growth of shrubbery and such.

The bushes were overgrown onto the hiking path so much that I felt like a machete would have been incredibly useful. Because we were pushing through the undergrowth we found we were getting covered with both pollen and ticks. The pollen I can handle, but the ticks - NO. About every 25 yards or so we did a brief 'tick check' on each other to brush off any of the offending creatures.

Our last night there we enjoyed a Jiffy Pop snack. I've never actually used one of these before so I was especially excited to watch the popcorn expand inside the packaging. It was pretty tasty - or maybe I was just cold and hungry enough that it seemed of better quality than it was.

Aside from arriving home a little more sick than we left, a jolly good time was had by all. Except for all of the ticks.

I hate ticks! We never had them as an issue in Washington, but out here, they are bad. We have to do tick checks on the kids daily from spring through fall. Kevin had one embedded just below his rear, that he didn't notice for a day. He seems fine though, no lyme's disease. Olivia is completely paranoid of them. We've found the most on her over the last few years. must be the red hair.

What about the night terrors?! Did you sleep like a baby or scare everyone to death?

P.S. That is a tiny looking tent, and I am digging the pig tail look.

Whoa. Ticks, huh? My estimation of you just shot up a notch. That's pretty badass ;-)
