Crested Butte Hike

Mr X and I decided last weekend, spur of the moment, that we needed to get away. So we went to Crested Butte because A) we've been in the winter and we loved  it, B) we wanted to see it in the summer, and C) we've heard that it's the official wildflower capital of Colorado. So off we went.

Time was not on our side so we felt the need to really make the most of it once we arrived. It takes about 4 hours to get there. We arrived around lunchtime, had a picnic in our car and then headed out for a hike.

A view from the town.
This is the beginning of our hike - sort of - we'd been walking for maybe ten minutes.

Mr X really wants to come back here in July because from what we could tell there were a fair amount of fish in this lake. (Polarized sunglasses really help out with that sort of research.)

I nearly stepped on this - it was a Robin's egg that somehow had fallen out of whatever nest from whence it was originally deposited and was sitting at the ends of the lake's water line. I know I'm not supposed to touch them but I figured this one was a goner anyway. I've never seen one that I know of in real life.

This is what rushing snow melt looks like. I wish there was more.

One thing I love about the Crested Butte area is that the whole area, 360 degrees, is surrounded by mountains. It's truly breathtaking.

Mr X and several water falls of snow melt behind him.

Remember what I said about the incredible views everywhere? Yup, this is yet another.

I'm always on the lookout for wild berries. Here in the Rockies I've only seen wild raspberries and wild strawberries. It seemed that on this particular hike the ground was just covered in wild strawberries the whole way. Maybe I'll get to snack on some when/if we come back later this summer. If we get that lucky.
