During our hike through Arches, I got about three feet away from this snake, unknowingly of course, before some passer-by who was already aware of the snake said, "I wouldn't get too close to that tree if I were you..." This of course caused me to stop in my tracks - right next to the tree and subsequently the snake. I have no idea what kind it was but it gave me the heebie-jeebies anyway.
After having camped for a night already, I noticed the next day that a giant tree right across the street from our campground appeared to be the chosen nesting ground for hundreds of bats. This creeped me out a bit too. When Mr X and I would walk back to our campsite at night we noticed the bats flying around. If you can make the photo below bigger, you'll see lots of black dots all over in the tree. But maybe the picture is bad enough that you can't see them. I don't know. But they were certainly there. Loads of them!
